Windows 7 nearing “End of Life.” Here’s What You Need to Know

The end of the Windows 7 lifecycle is set for January 14, 2020. “End of life” means that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. The Windows 7 “end of life” cycle is comparable to that of previous Microsoft OS. Microsoft says, “Every Windows product has a lifecycle. The lifecycle begins when a product is released and ends when it’s no longer supported. Knowing key dates in this lifecycle helps you make informed decisions about when to update, upgrade or make other changes to your software.”

If you are one of the millions still using Windows 7, we strongly recommend taking the necessary steps to upgrade ASAP. After the “end of life” date, you can continue to use Windows 7, but do so at your own risk. Without the necessary security updates to fight the millions of viruses and malware being developed on a regular basis, your data is extremely vulnerable.

Can I upgrade my existing PC to Windows 10?

You can upgrade compatible Windows 7 PCs based on specific requirements with a full license. To take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities, Microsoft recommends moving to a new PC with Windows 10.

What Do I Need To Do To Prepare?

Upgrading to a new OS takes time and planning, especially if you have numerous machines and systems to assess. An efficient and successful transition to a new OS requires you to:

  • Find machines that are running Windows 7 and thus need to be upgraded or replaced
  • Create a timeline and budget for upgrades and replacements
  • Develop security controls to separate critical systems from Windows 7 machines that cannot be upgraded or removed
  • Train your employees on how to use the new OS. This one should not be overlooked!
